SUMMARY OF MODELS AND STYLES

MODEL P21

The Delta Controls Model P21 probe has high intrinsic gain. It is equipped with a wrap around concentric ground reference sheath which acts as a ground reference when used in plastic and lined tanks. The linear ground sheath allows it to be used with transmitters in horizontal cylindrical tanks and other containers having nonlinear sidewalls. It requires only a small 1" NPT process connection. It has high inherent gain sensitivity and is useful on materials having low dielectric constants, such as light hydrocarbons. It allows full scale calibration over a very small level change, and calibration can be done outside the vessel.

MODEL P22

The Delta Controls Model P22 probe also has high intrinsic gain. It is equipped with a wrap around concentric ground reference sheath. It has high inherent gain sensitivity and allows full scale calibration over just a few inches when the liquid is conductive. The ground sheath is large and provides an open bore. It is intended for use when the liquid is viscous or carries entrained solids. The open bore also allows fast speed of response and resists plugging. The ground sheath produces a linear output signal when used in a plastic tank, a horizontal cylinder or any tank with nonlinear sidewalls. The electronic module/probe combo can be calibrated outside the vessel, when required, for convenience or safety.

MODEL P23

The Delta Controls Model P23 probe is for interface service, and is exactly the same as the P22, except that it has vertical slots milled into the concentric ground reference sheath. These slots are offset and overlapping so that the liquid is always free to flow in or out of the sheath. This is a necessity when being used for interface service. The interface transition zone must not be kept from the sensing probe by a solid tube wall. This probe is strong and resists flowing currents, waves, vortices, and is insensitive to surface turbulence and splashing.

MODEL P25

The Delta Controls Model P25 probe is intended for high temperature/pressure chemical processing and steam/slurry applications. It is also highly resistant to corrosion . It is equipped with triple sealing for utmost safety and reliability. It is equipped with a wrap around tubular ground reference. This allows full scale range calibration over just a few inches of conductive liquid. The ground tube is relatively large and provides an open bore. It can be used when the liquid is highly turbulent or carries entrained solids. The open bore also allows fast speed of response and resists plugging. The tubular ground reference sheath produces a linear output signal when used in horizontal cylinders or other tanks with nonlinear sidewalls. The electronic module/probe combo can be calibrated outside the vessel for reasons of convenience, safety, and without varying the process liquid level.

MODEL P26

The Delta Controls Model P26 probe is exactly the same as the P25 except that it has vertical slots milled into the tubular ground reference. These slots are offset and overlapping so that the interface liquids are always free to flow in or out. This is a necessity when being used for interface service. The interface transition zone must not be kept away from flowing into the sensing rod by a solid tube wall.

MODEL P31

The Delta Controls Model P31 external caged probe is primarily used in the chemical, petrochemical, refining and other continuous process industries. This probe design can be tested, calibrated, and maintained without shutting down or disturbing the process. Common applications include Dowtherm® heating fluid, interface position, tower bottoms; water knockout traps, etc. The P31 probe is equipped with an external (to the process vessel or tank) cage. This cage is a vertical cylindrical pressure vessel containing the probe. Block valves are normally installed (by the user) between the cage connection ports and the process vessel or tank. This allows the instrument to be isolated from the process pressure (or partially full tank) for testing and calibration purposes without blow down or draining the process. The cage serves as the ground reference for the sensing rod. This is the same principle employed by the Series 20 probes with tubular ground sheaths. The P31 is essentially an "external cage" version of the Series 20 internal caged probes. A signal linear to the liquid level or an interface position is generated for alarm or signal transmission outputs.

MODEL P51

The Delta Controls Model P51 probe is designed as a general purpose sensor for use in many common applications. The sensing rod is jacketed in thick extruded and welded PTFE Teflon®. There are no thin coatings or glued joints to fail. The sensing rod sealing gland is extremely reliable. Thousands have been used over the last 30 years, sealing in such process materials as steam, hydrogen cyanide, gasoline, chlorine, liquid oxygen, chocolate, and wastewater. The gland follower seals are inside the body, which has a solid exterior. There are no screwed together joints in the gland which can inadvertently be turned, causing leaks, environmental spills, and toxic discharges. The gland body may be made of exotic metal or industrial plastics for highly corrosive service.

MODEL P52

The Delta Controls Model P52 probe has the same appearance as the P51 probe except that it has a larger gland, seal, and sensing probe. It is intended for use in services with higher mechanical stress, such as agitated tanks, services requiring long unsupported sensing rods, mixers, and the like.

MODEL P53
Picture not available

The Delta Controls Model P53 probe is very similar to the P51 general purpose probe and is based on that design. It is intended for applications where it would be impractical or impossible to depressurize or drain the process system for inspection and testing of the probe instrument. Such processes include oil refineries, gas cycle plants, large storage tanks, and toxic materials. The gland body of the P53 is effectively made very long by the addition of a polished seamless tube mounted coaxial over part of the sensing probe. A second sealing gland with Teflon® seals is installed on the outside of the tube. A block valve on the vessel shuts off the tank liquid. The second gland is screwed into the block valve and tightened to prevent leaks. The valve is then opened and the P53 is pushed in through the valve until the active portion of the sensing rod is inside the vessel. A mechanical clamp locks the probe in position until a need to remove it occurs. The gland follower seal design has been reliably used for over 30 years. The PTFE Teflon® insulation jacket is a welded heavy extrusion and not a thin coating or merely glued in place.

MODEL P55

The Delta Controls Model P55 probe allows R.F. Admittance technology to be used in very high pressure and temperature services. This recently developed probe can replace nuclear gamma ray sensors and solid mechanical displacers in many applications. Using a probe avoids difficulty due to large size, high purchase costs and high installation costs. This probe has been applied to high pressure/temperature fatty acid reactors, steam condensate knockouts, coal gassification, and similar difficult applications. The ceramic materials used are very strong, however, they are brittle at ambient temperature. Delta Controls has developed packaging that protects the units from inadvertent damage while being transported or stored.

MODEL P56

The Delta Controls Model P56 probe is the same as the P55 probe except that it incorporates "Triple Sealing" for extremely high pressure and temperature services.

MODEL P57

The Delta Controls Model P57 probe is commonly used in tanks made of reinforced plastics, or metal tanks lined with rubber, glass, or plastic. Such tanks do not provide the ground reference plane required by an admittance instrument. The P57 has a ground rod, mounted parallel to the insulated sensing probe, which provides the required ground reference. A stability bar(s) stabilizes the sensing probe and ground rod position when the insertion length is long. The P57 is widely used on water treating chemicals, stored fuel oil, day tanks, oil/water interface, and processed food oils. The open design allows it to be used in many applications; even when solids are entrained in the liquid.

MODEL P61

The Delta Controls Model P61 sensing probe is designed for sanitary or no metallic ion service which require superior cleanliness and high reliability. The wetted surfaces are composed entirely of virgin natural Kynar® (PVDF). These surfaces have been welded together into a single piece without joints, crevices, or cracks. The finished unit is flame polished for the utmost in smoothness and cleanability The plastic flange facing has a 316 S.S. backing plate for strength and reliability. The basic sanitary flange mates with a Ladish Tri-Clamp® tubing size flange. Other type connections, such as ACME nut, APC, and Cherry-Burrell are optional.

MODEL P62

The Delta Controls Model P62 is essentially a Model P61 which has been equipped with a concentric ground reference tube. The P62 inner portion is connected to the reference tube using a Tri-clamp sanitary flange. The inner unit is easily removed from the outer ground reference tube for cleaning or inspection. The concentric shield is mounted to the process vessel by a second tri-clamp sanitary flange. It can be left in place while the inner portion is withdrawn. The reference portion can then be removed as required. The Kynar® (PVDF) sensing rod/seal jacket is a single piece welded part, without joints, cracks, or crevices. The finished unit is flame polished for the utmost in smoothness and cleanability The ground reference tube is made of 316 S.S. and is polished both internally and externally. The integral ground reference allows the P62 to be used in plastic tanks and in lined tanks which do not provide the necessary parallel ground reference.

MODEL P66

The Delta Controls Model P66 sensing probe has all plastic wetted parts. It is designed for use in processes and storage tanks where the possibility of contamination cannot be allowed. Some process examples are injectable solutions, pharmaceutical dilution fluids, heavy water for research, electronic chipmaking, and high quality plating systems. The P66 also commonly finds application in industrial process systems which are extremely corrosive. Kynar® (PVDF) is very inert and unaffected by almost all strong acids and bases below a temperature of 275°F (135°C). Applications include hydrofluoric acid level, refinery hydroformers, bromine condensers, chlorine generation cells, radioactive processes and wastes.

MODEL P68

The Delta Controls Model P68 sensing probe has all plastic wetted parts. It is designed for use in processes and storage tanks where the possibility of contamination cannot be allowed. Some process examples are silicon etchants, high purity plating solutions, and and ferric chloride. It is the same as the P66, except that it is equipped with a parallel encapsulated ground reference rod. The P68 can be used in plastic or glass tanks. It also can be used with level transmitters in horizontal cylindrical tanks.

MODEL P71

The Delta Controls Model P71 probe cable is jacketed with PTFE Teflon® insulating material. The bottom cable fitting is electrically isolated from the cable. The probe should normally be located near and not more than 1/4 of the vessel diameter away from the vessel centerline. The P71 is primarily intended for liquid and interface measurement service; however there are some applications that require its attributes. These include damp wood chips and pulpstock chests. The cable is provided with a bolt thread for direct attachment to the bottom of the tank. It may also be equipped with a lower weight to keep it straight using gravity. The cable must be vertical and taut after installation. A simple bottom weight is the preferred method in calm, still storage tanks. A pipe stilling well should be used in conjunction with the weight when the liquid is agitated or where strong flowing currents are present. Fastening the lower cable termination to the bottom of an agitated tank is required when a stilling well cannot be installed or in applications where the stilling well may plug with deposits. This method has a significant disadvantage because the tank must be drained for either installation or removal of the cable probe.

MODEL P72

The Delta Controls Model P72 is needed when a tank is very large or has nonlinear side walls such as does a horizontal cylinder or a sphere. It also is used where indoor tanks have only limited headspace above them. Most applications require the optional bottom weight to keep the cable taut. The P72 probe is essentially a P71 to which has been added a parallel ground reference cable. Many nonconductive liquids have low dielectric constant values. It is important that the rangeability tables be consulted and followed to insure adequate intrinsic gain of the probe. A parallel ground cable will also usually solve rangeability problems in large tanks of low dielectric liquids. The P72 should generally be used when the level change is less than ten (10) feet, where the tank diameter is greater than eight (8) feet, or when the measured liquid has a low dielectric constant (less than 3.5 units). Low dielectric liquids include fuel oil, gasoline, benzene, and liquefied petroleum gasses. The P72, with parallel ground cable, is also required when the tank has a nonlinear ground reference side wall, such as is found in a horizontal cylindrical tank or an LPG sphere. This probe is not suitable for service in powders or solids.

SERIES 80

The Delta Controls Series 80 Probes are rigid rod type probes for dry powders and granular solids. The sensing rod is a "through-the-gland" design for maximum strength and resistance to bending and seal damage. These types are necessary when the probe is to be mounted into the side of a vessel. The glands are sealed against water, moisture, and tank pressure. The sensing rod and body are 300 S.S., the insulator is Delrin®, and the seal is Teflon®.

Model P81 - Is a medium duty probe for inserting in from the side or down from the top; it may be covered by up to 26 feet of sand or 65 feet of grain.

Model P82 - Is a general duty, rugged, side inserted probe. It may be covered with up to 55 feet of sand or 130 feet of grain.

Model P83 - Is a heavy duty, side inserted probe for more demanding jobs. It may be covered with up to 75 feet of sand or 180 feet of grain. It will also withstand small to medium size chunk solids.

Model P84 - Is an extra heavy duty side flush face probe for the very toughest of applications. It may be covered with up to 150 feet of sand or 375 feet of grain. It is also rugged enough to withstand some larger chunk size solids.

SERIES 86
Pictures not available

These Delta Controls Series 86 sensing probes are used on dry powders and granulated materials. They are mounted on top of the tank or silo with the cable hanging down inside. Weights are required on the bottom when strong air currents are present. The insertion should be limited to 6 feet when high velocity air currents, such as at a cyclone, are present. Much longer flexible cables, with or without a weight, can be whipped about by the air flow and may cause erratic operation and maintenance problems. The glands are sealed against tank pressure, moisture and water.

Model P87 - Is a general duty probe with a 0.125"ø (3 mm ø) cable only (no weight). It is intended for service where roiling or side-to-side movement of the process solids occur. Applications include cement load out bins, flour bins, bottom centerline takeout pellet hoppers, etc.

Model P87W - Is a general duty probe with a 0.125"ø (3 mm ø) cable and bottom weight. It is intended for services such as plastic pellets, grain, etc. The switchpoint is set at the midpoint of the weight (0.88"ø x 12.0" long) (23 mm ø X 300 mm long)

Model P88 - Is a heavy duty probe with a 0.19"ø (5 mm ø) cable and bottom weight. The weight (1.00"ø x 12" long) is intended for service in heavy granules, and similar small chunk material. Services such as Taconite, marble chips, and the like are reliably sensed.

Model P89A - Is a heavy duty cable probe which is hung from an internal to the tank support. The lower end is free to move and follow the flow of material. Multiple switch points or a 4-20 mADC signal are common output signals. Used for reliable service in tall cement silos and the like.

Model P89B - Is a heavy duty cable probe which is hung from an internal to the tank support and is also tied off to a similar support at the bottom of the tank. This unit is required when the material flow is substantial in the horizontal direction. Significant horizontal movement can cause measurement errors and can even short a probe out against the wall if the bottom end is not secured in place.

MODEL P91

The Delta Controls Model P91 probe floats on the top surface of oil in a skimmer basin or separation vessel. A vertical sensing rod, with parallel ground reference rods, is supported by outrigger floats. The sensing rod goes through the floating oil and into the water. The P91 probe/module measures the distance from the top of the oil to the interface between the water and the floating oil. This measurement is then converted into a 4-20 mADC signal equivalent to the thickness of oil present. Optionally, an on/off differential control signal can be produced to control a drainage pump or skimmer trough. The P91 is used by petroleum refineries; machinery manufacturing plants, oil field salt water disposal companies, and similar industrial operating companies.
